NaNoWriMo – Week 2

November is National Novel Writing Month—NaNoWriMo—and I decided to join in at the last minute. Last week I wrote about Week 1-ish, and now here’s an update on Week 2. I’m also be doing the #NaNothatWriMo 30-day picture challenge I found on Instagram to have a little fun as well. I’ll post weekly digests of the topics, but you can also follow along on the Highmoon Press Instagram account.

Week 2 was still slow in terms of words written, but much better in the quality and flow of said words. Where on Week 2 I was writing as I was mentally outlining the novel, this week I had a clear idea of where Act I is going, so I gave myself wholly to the writing. I also embraced that this is a long-form story, and stopped worrying about trying to artificially make things happen in a short amount of time. I’m letting my characters take time to do things, especially as they recover from a fairly explosive start, and discover the world around. I’m having fun getting to know these characters again and for the first time, and look forward to what’s ahead.

Day 11. Writing Tip. Only one: Just do it. Write. Anytime you can, anywhere you can, never stop. Write even if all you can afford is every other day for only 10 minutes, just do it, and never stop doing it. Write, write, write.

Day 12. Writing Beverage. In general, I’d say coffee is my writing beverage of choice, if only because when I’m writing consistently, it’s usually super early in the morning. This month, however, I’ve also been having hot apple cider, especially at work. Because autumn. ☕🍎🍁

Day 13. Who’s Your Cheerleader. My wife, Megan, is my biggest cheerleader, encouraging me to create stories, even if they’re fantasy/sci-fi which isn’t entirely her cup of tea. Shoutout also to all my friends who cheer me on time and time again. 🎉

Day 14. Where Are You Writing Wednesday. I squeezed a quick writing session during lunch at work using my new mobile setup of 8-in tablet + Bluetooth keyboard + Google Docs. Me like.

Day 15. Mid-month Check-in. 3023 words. Thanks to a late-night push, I cracked the 3K mark, making me only 22,000 words behind schedule! (Ha!) Although it is highly unlikely I’ll make it to 50,000 words, it is entirely doable for me to make it to 10,000, so I’m making that my personal goal. At the end of the day, I now have words written I didn’t have before, and that’s the real win.

Day 16. Writing Quote. Neil Gaiman nails it with this quote. It really is that easy and that hard.

Day 17. Writing For Fun or Hope To Publish. Both, really. I write because it’s what I do, but I also publish my work. In the past it’s been mostly my gaming work, but with Highmoon Press I am expanding to fiction and nonfiction as well.
