One of my goals for last year was to join one of my church’s small groups. It didn’t happen last year, and it hasn’t happened so far this year. In part, this is due to my haphazard schedule, which changes from week to week, and makes it hard to commit to a specific day and time to meet up. Partly, though, it’s due to me. As much as I want to be in a community, I also find myself hesitant and trepidant, and while I know I need to work on that, it doesn’t change the end result of me not yet having met with, let alone joined a small group. But as I said in my previous post, I want this, I need this, so I’m doing something about it.
As the title states, I am starting an online Bible study group. While it is easy to say, it is a daunting task. I have never led Bible study, and while I am familiar with literary analysis and discussion, the Bible is not just another book to read and talk about. That said I do recognize that I have the skills needed to lead a discussion precisely because I am familiar with literary analysis so I can bring those skills to bear on my task.
At this point, I am only putting the idea out there for people to be aware of. I still have lots of details to work out before we’re ready to launch. I have to figure out how many people I would like to join the group (thinking between 4 to 10), what we’ll study first (no idea yet), where will we host our online bible study group (Facebook group or Google+ community), what format will our study take (Q&A, Verse and responses, discussion posts, etc) and so on. I expect to have an initial plan to share with all in a few days.
My biggest fear, of course, is that no one else will be interested in joining my online bible study group, but I have to do this even with that very real risk looming. If I find others with the yearning to engage in Bible study with me, that would be awesome, but if no one joins I still wouldn’t think of it as a failure.
I gotta do this, and I would love it if you joined me in studying the word of God. For now leave me a note here or wherever you normally see my posts linked letting me know that you are interested to know more.
Join me. Let’s build a community together.
