Last week we all celebrated Thanksgiving, one of my favorite holidays of the year. My little family traveled up north to spend the holiday weekend with my girlfriend’s family, and for a nice autumn vacation. Although it already passed, and in the spirit of Psalm 9:1 which says, “I will give thanks to the Lord with all my heart; I will tell of all Your wonders,” I want to give thanks for a few things.
First, I want to thank God Almighty for guiding me back to Him and back to the good news of Jesus as my savior. Every time I think back to the road I traveled to get where I am today, the twists and turns my life has taken and how each of them turned out to be a step leading to the next, leading to the next, then leading me where I am right now, I can see the hand and will of God as clear as day. Arriving here was only the beginning, and I now have another road ahead of me as I learn what it means to be a servant of God and Christ, and I am thankful for it all.
Second, I am immensely thankful for my baby daughter. She is a miracle in every sense of the word, showing up in our lives after we had made our peace with not being able to have kids. She is truly a gift from God, and what a wonderful gift she is. Being a father has been the most challenging thing I’ve ever had to do, but it is so rewarding. It is truly the best job I never knew I wanted or could do. I look forward to raising her in the ways of the Lord, for His kindness is everlasting.
And lastly, though not least in any way, I give thanks for my girlfriend, who after this holiday weekend is now my fiance. She came into my life out of nowhere. We met seemingly by chance. And yet the first moment I saw her, I was hooked. After a day spent wandering the wonderful city of Washington DC, I was smitten. After a year of long-distance dating, a year of growth and challenges, of tears and laughter, I knew I wanted to spend my life with this woman. She has been my cheerleader, my shoulder to cry on, my ear to my problems, my heart, my soul. She is the mother to my child, my best friend and beloved, and not a day goes by when I don’t thank God for bringing us together.
There are a multitude of other things I am thankful for as well, but these three certainly stand out. For these and for so many more, I give thanks to God.
